Science Pubs ODU is an opportunity for the community to engage with ODU researchers in an informal setting. Join in tonight (6pm) for lively and engaging discussions; a curious mind is all that is needed! First 20 to arrive get a beverage on ODU!

  • Michelle Covi, Ph.D. – Michelle Covi is an assistant professor of practice in the Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Old Dominion University and is one of the Virginia Sea Grant extension staff, helping to connect expertise in our universities to address climate change and sea level rise adaptation issues. She has a PhD in Coastal Resources Management from East Carolina University and focuses her research on climate change and sea level rise risk perception, communication and public participation in regional decision-making.
  • Derek Loftis – Dr. Derek Loftis is an Assistant Research Scientist working in the Center for Coastal Resources Management at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). His research focuses on: (1) development of numerical simulations and forecasts for regions prone to flood damage, (2) validation of model accuracy with remote sensing observations, and (3) engineering solutions to enhance adaptability to future flood events to protect human life and valuable infrastructural assets.
