Public Lecture in Kilmarnock: The R/V Virginia: A Nod to the Past-An Eye to the Future @ Lancaster Community Library
Feb 23 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

In 2018, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science welcomed a new, state-of-the-art research vessel, the R/V Virginia. The Virginia is the most modern, most capable marine research vessel in its size class in the U.S. This talk will provide a brief history of the use of research vessels throughout the world while beginning to define what makes a modern research vessel a research vessel.  Once defined, we will look at the rich history of research vessels operated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science culminating with the newly constructed R/V Virginia.

Flood Awareness Week
Mar 8 – Mar 14 all-day

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster, but only 3% of Virginians have flood insurance. It is estimated that 1 inch of water in a home can cause upwards of $25,000 in damages.

Virginia Flood Awareness Week encourages Virginians to learn about their flood risk and protect the life they’ve built with flood insurance.

Coastal Virginia CRS Workgroup Meeting
Mar 25 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

CRS Users Groups are communities that meet regularly to provide a forum about the National Flood Insurance Program’s voluntary program, the Community Rating System, and other floodplain management issues. Meetings often include informational presentations and group discussions to transfer knowledge and troubleshoot difficult floodplain management issues. Non-participating communities often attend these meetings to ask questions and learn from the discussions and presentations as they contemplate joining the program. Established in 2010, the Coastal Virginia CRS Workgroup includes locality representatives from a wide range of coastal communities in the Commonwealth. They also welcome participation from the private and academic sectors interested in learning about the NFIP, CRS, and floodplain management.

The Coastal Virginia CRS Workgroup meets every other month at 700 Town Center Drive, Newport News, Virginia. Meetings are typically held in the James Room and occasionally in the Warwick Room, both of which are located on the first floor of the building. Meetings run from 10AM-Noon. All are welcome! Registration or prior notice is not required.
