Lessons in Resilience from America’s Coastal Communities

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) and the National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) invite you to a briefing to discuss climate/weather risks to America’s coastal communities and the types of resilience plans local governments and regional partnerships are developing to safeguard their residents, built assets, and economies. The briefing will explore current and future infrastructure challenges facing public officials and how the federal government fits into the pursuit of these shared development goals.

Hampton Roads Adaptation Forum

Please save the date! The Hampton Roads Adaptation Forum will take place on Friday, February 23. The topic is Infrastructure Resilience. The meeting plans to highlight local and comparable utilities and communications resilience projects and ways to reach/build more resilience into our infrastructure going forward. The meeting will be held in Newport News at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District NS Training Facility. Newport News Rain Barrel Workshop
Feb 24 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

The Mariners’ Museum has joined Newport News Waterworks, the Newport News Department of Public Works, and the Newport News Master Gardeners to offer rain barrel making workshops. For $70 you can attend a workshop and assemble a 55-gallon rain barrel to take home. Advance registration is required. You sign up and show up, they’ll provide the materials, then you make it and take it home!

Call the Virginia Extension Office at 757-591-4838 for details and to register for a workshop.

AY 2017/18 ODU Resilience Collaborative Faculty Research Seed Funds- Proposal Deadline

[OPEN TO ODU FACULTY MEMBERS ONLY]

ODU-RC Faculty Research Seed Funds (ODU-RC FRSF) provide up to $15,000 per project to support resilience-related projects aligned with the faculty member or collaborative team’s research agenda. The total funding available for these funds is $30,000. The purpose of the program is to nurture research and future scholarly efforts and raise the visibility of the ODU-RC as a consortium of leading scholars actively engaged in research, education, and outreach on critical issues for resilience at the community, regional, national, and global levels. ODU-RC FRSF awards are intended to position faculty members/teams to publish and present on their research, build a strong research agenda, and may provide the foundation for external funding applications.

TIMELINE:

  • December 15, 2017- Funding opportunity announced
  • February 26, 2018, 4 pm- Proposal DEADLINE
  • April 15, 2018- ODU-RC Faculty Research Seed Fund Awards announced

Tourism Business Resilience Workshop @ Ramada Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Join in for a workshop targeted at tourism business owners and managers. The goal of the workshops is to assist business owners and managers in assessing the level of resilience of their businesses to natural hazards, such as flooding and hurricanes, and to provide them with the tools to increase their resilience and business continuity. Workshops will also include guest speakers from tourism businesses or destinations that have dealt with similar hazards to share lessons learned.

Spring 2018 CCPO and ODURC Seminar Series

The Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) and the ODU Resilience Collaborative (ODURC) 2018 Spring Seminar Series. Topics for the seminars include scientific, social and economic aspects of sea level rise and climate change, and high latitude ocean circulation.

The speaker at this seminar will be Shimon Wdowinski [Dept. of Earth & Environment, Florida International University]
