Dr. David Sedlak will present the inaugural lecture in the Anne Carney Sustainable Clean Water Lecture
Series, a lecture series created through the generous support of Ms. M. Anne Carney. Professor Sedlak
has been actively engaged in water quality research for over 20 years focusing on the fate of
chemical contaminants with the long-term goal of developing cost-effective, safe, and sustainable
systems to manage water resources. He is particularly interested in the development of local sources
of water. His research has addressed water reuse, the practice of using municipal wastewater effluent
to sustain aquatic ecosystems and augment drinking water supplies, as well as the treatment and use
of urban runoff and contaminated groundwater from industrial sites as water supplies.

His lecture will focus on current and future challenges in urban water management and how new
technologies, public policies and management strategies can be used to meet future demands and
maintain or improve water quality in natural systems.
