CRS Users Groups are communities that meet regularly to provide a forum about the National Flood Insurance Program’s voluntary program, the Community Rating System, and other floodplain management issues. Meetings often include informational presentations and group discussions to transfer knowledge and troubleshoot difficult floodplain management issues. Non-participating communities often attend these meetings to ask questions and learn from the discussions and presentations as they contemplate joining the program. Established in 2010, the Coastal Virginia CRS Workgroup includes locality representatives from a wide range of coastal communities in the Commonwealth. They also welcome participation from the private and academic sectors interested in learning about the NFIP, CRS, and floodplain management.

Speaker: Pam Mason, from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Center for Coastal Resources Management will present on a new project being developed by VIMS (with Wetlands Watch support) that will help local governments in Virginia’s coastal zone reduce structural flooding. This project identifies existing natural and nature based features (NNBF) already in the community that protect structures from flooding, while identifying areas where NNBFs can be installed and the types of features that will protect the greatest number of structures. Relevant to our group because NNBFs that earn CRS credits or qualify for water quality regulatory requirements are specifically highlighted. This presentation should be interesting because of the projects ability to look at the flood risk of specific structures and methods for reducing or eliminating that risk.
